Adding new
satellites to Monterey model receivers
To add a new satellite to a Monterey model receiver, you must first
locate a satellite that has the same format as the satellite you
are trying to locate. For example, if you want to add a Galaxy satellite,
go to the nearest Galaxy satellite you have in memory. (Refer to
your satellite TV guide to find the closest similar satellite.)
Once you have reached the satellite you selected:
- Go to MENU 9, by pressing the MENU button followed by the number
9.
- Using the UP and DOWN arrows on the 4 way pad of the remote,
move the cursor to the line that says ADD NEW SATELLITE and press
ENTER.
- It will ask you to enter the new name; simply press the letter
then the number of the new name. It will tell you that the satellite
is added and the new name should be showing in the upper right
corner of your screen.
- Go to MENU 7 by pressing MENU followed by the number 7.
- Move the cursor to DISH POSITION and press ENTER. (Make sure
you are on channel that your satellite TV guide shows to be active.)
- Using the east or west buttons on your remote, move the dish
toward the new satellite. When you see a picture, verify that
you are on the satellite by referring to your satellite TV guide.
If it is the right picture, press MENU, MENU to save. The new
satellite should now be added to the receiver's memory.
Passwords
for all receivers
The factory default password for all Chaparral satellite receivers
is 2, 3, 4, 5. If your receiver asks for a password, try that first.
If the factory password does not work, or if you have forgotten
a password that you put in, you will need to do a password override.
Password
override for Monterey model receivers
To override the password on Monterey receivers, press the Satellite
button, then the message button, then the text button when it asks
for a password. When you are asked for the password, rather than
enter numbers, press SATELLITE, MSG, TEXT. This will permanently
remove the password from the Monterey. If you need the password
protection, you will have to go back in the Receiver Setup and re-enter
another. If you have tried the password overrides, but everything
is still coming up locked, it may be necessary to master clear your
receiver or call a local satellite dealer.
"Program
is above rating ceiling, enter password"
If you are getting an on screen message that says "Program
is above rating ceiling, enter password". This is not a password
contained in your satellite receivers memory. This comes from the
decoder. If you have forgotten your rating ceiling password, the
only way to clear it is to call the program provider who you subscribe
your pay channels from, and they can clear it over the air.

clear" is displayed on the front panel. This should only
take 3-5 seconds.
The receiver is now restored to the factory database. The factory
password is 2,3,4,5.
Actuator
error on Monterey receivers
Actuator error means that the receiver is trying to move the dish,
but is not getting any feedback or dish position numbers back from
the dish. If you are near the receiver when you select a satellite,
you should hear a click, then Actuator Error comes up on the screen.
There are two things that can cause this problem:
- The motor is turning, but there are no counts being registered
back at the receiver. Before you go change the sensor, there are
a couple of things to check. First, look at the actuator section
spring clip connectors on the back of the receiver. They are labeled
Sensor, +5, and ground. Most systems use a 2 wire type sensor.
One wire should be hooked to the sensor terminal and another hooked
to ground. The color of the two wires does not matter, because
in this particular connection, the wires can be reversed and it
will still work. The +5 terminal is usually not connected. Check
these wires to make sure they have a solid connection in their
spring clip terminals. If so, the problem is most likely to be
a bad sensor in the dish drive motor.
- The dish is not moving at all. This usually means that the motor
is not getting any voltage to make it turn or the motor drive
is over extended or stuck. Look at the dish. If it looks like
it is pointed way to far to the east or west, almost looking into
the ground, you probably should call a local dealer to fix it
an find out why it happened. If the dish is pointing in what looks
to be a normal direction, but will not move at all, you need to
check the fuse or circuit breaker and the motor wire connections
at the back of the receiver. The motor wires are the 2 thickest
copper wires in the satellite pack cable. Each of these wires
connects to one of the two motor terminals on the rear panel.
The motor terminals are clearly marked with the letters MTR. If
the wires are making a good connection, the next thing to check
is the fuse or circuit breaker. Some receivers will have fuses
and some will have a small button like circuit breaker. What ever
you happen to have, will be labeled as Actuator. If you have a
breaker, simply press in on the button to reset it, then see if
the dish will move. If you have a fuse, take it out and check
it, if it is bad, replace it, then see if the dish will move.
If the dish will still not move, you will need to call a local
satellite dealer
When you select a new satellite or manually try to move the dish,
if you listen to the satellite receiver, you normally hear a loud
click. This is the sound of the motor drive relay engaging to send
the voltage to the motor drive so it can turn to move your dish.
If you do not hear this clicking sound, it usually means that the
receivers logic is not letting it tell the dish to move. The most
common cause for this is that the east and west electronic limits
are set either at the same number or the satellite you are trying
to move to is past the limit. In Monterey receivers, you can go
to Menu 6 to see how the limits are set. If the limits are set too
close together or at the same number, try resetting them. See your
manual for instructions or call a local satellite dealer.
When
trying to change satellites or channels, you get the message "Source
not Monterey"
The problem is that the receiver is looking at the external source.
The Audio video switcher in the receiver has been switched to one
of the external inputs. The solution to this is to press the LARGE
SELECT key or the SWAP key on the remote until the satellite picture
returns to the screen and the message on the screen says SOURCE:
Monterey
The remote
control works fine some of the time, but at other times, it will
barely work at all. Or it works fine if you are in front of the
receiver, but won't work very well from other rooms.
The problem is usually caused by UHF interference. The Monterey
remotes send out Infra Red signals that are picked up by the remote
eye in the front panel. But they also send out a UHF signal that
is picked up by the 6 inch whip antenna that is attached to the
UHF Antenna Module, which is plugged into the back of the receiver.
Any electronic equipment can emit interfering signals. Even the
Monterey itself can interfere with the UHF module if it is close
enough to it. Most often the solution to this problem is to move
the antenna module as high up in the air and as far away from any
electronic equipment as possible. The cable that comes with the
module is 6 feet long. Occasionally it may be necessary to use an
extension cable.
Certain
keys on remote don't work well. Most of the buttons work perfectly
but the ones that are used most often have stopped working.
This is usually caused by a worn rubber keypad. The conductive
backing under the button is worn off. Replacing the keypad will
normally fix this problem. The keypads are no longer available.
Refer to Ordering Remote Controls to order a universal remote control.
You
have no audio on any channel and you have already checked to make
sure that the volume is turned up on the satellite receiver and
the TV.
Try unplugging the receiver from the AC outlet for one second,
then, plug it back in. Sometimes the main computer processor can
get stuck in a mode where it does not talk to all parts of the receiver.
Unplugging the receiver from it's power source briefly, resets the
communications within the receiver and may solve a variety of problems.
The receiver
is asking for a password and you don't know or don't remember what
it is.
The factory default password for all Chaparral satellite receivers
is 2, 3, 4, 5. If your receiver asks for a password, try that first.
Again, that's 2,3,4,5. If the factory password does not work, or
if you have forgotten a password that you put in, you will need
to do a password override.
To override the password on Monterey receivers, you press the Satellite
button, then the message button, then the text button when it asks
for a password. When you are asked for the password, instead of
entering any numbers, press SATELLITE, MSG, TEXT. This will permanently
remove the password from the Monterey. If you need the password
protection, you will have to go back in the Receiver Setup and re-enter
another.
We get
many calls asking if the user can keep others from watching certain
satellites or channels. Also, asking how to keep unauthorized persons
from making change to the receivers memory. Following is a review
of the locking functions.
First is memory lock. What it does, if the Memory Lock is LOCKED,
is not let the permanent memory in the Monterey accept any changes.
You can still make tuning adjustments, but once you change the channel
or cycle the power, it goes back to the way you had set it before
the memory was locked.
You can also lock a channel. If a channel is locked, you cannot
view that channel unless you know the password. If you try to select
the channel, it asks for the password. You can do the same to any
satellite.
Finally, by using dish lock, you can lock the dish on one satellite
and no one can move the dish at all unless they know the password.
For instructions on LOCKING Functions (menu 4) please see the owners
manual.
You
are having trouble deleting an audio subcarrier
To delete extra audio subcarriers:
- Select the satellite and channel on which the audio subcarrier
is located.
- Press the AUDIO key to display the Audio Menu.
- Move the cursor to the subcarrier that you wish to delete.
